UN climate chief: Hacked e-mails are damaging
COPENHAGEN – The world is entering talks on a new climate pact with unprecendented unity and leaders must seize the moment to create a turning point in the battle against global warming, the U.N.'s top climate official said Sunday. At a news conference, Yvo de Boer called on the 192 nations represented at the U.N. climate summit starting Monday "to deliver a strong and long-term response to the challenge of climate change."
Even so, he worried that e-mails pilfered from a British university would fuel skepticism among those who believe that scientists exaggerate global warming.
"I think a lot of people are skeptical about this issue in any case," de Boer told The Associated Press earlier Sunday. "And then when they have the feeling ... that scientists are manipulating information in a certain direction then of course it causes concern in a number of people to say 'you see I told you so, this is not a real issue.'"
E-mails stolen from the climate unit at the University of East Anglia appeared to show some of world's leading scientists discussing ways to shield data from public scrutiny and suppress others' work. Read more.

Facts be Damned - 56 Newspapers to Sing As One About Copenhagen
Despite mounting evidence that key climate researchers were less than honest, and other indications that the science is not settled, tomorrow 56 newspapers will run a common front page editorial saying we have 'Fourteen days to seal history's judgment on this generation':
Tomorrow 56 newspapers in 45 countries take the unprecedented step of speaking with one voice through a common editorial. We do so because humanity faces a profound emergency....
The graphic at right, reprinted from The Guardian in Britain, show the newspapers which will be participating. Here's what's really motivating the alarmism, from the editorial:
Social justice demands that the industrialised world digs deep into its pockets and pledges cash to help poorer countries adapt to climate change, and clean technologies to enable them to grow economically without growing their emissions.... And fairness requires that the burden placed on individual developed countries should take into account their ability to bear it; for instance newer EU members, often much poorer than "old Europe", must not suffer more than their richer partners.
Social justice and fairness? I thought this was supposed to be about science.
Thankfully, we still have the internet, and bloggers who still care about uncovering the truth as to climate change. We certainly can't rely on the mainstream newspapers anymore, if we ever could.

Scientists Behaving Badly
A corrupt cabal of global warming alarmists are exposed by a massive document leak
Slowly and mostly unnoticed by the major news media, the air has been going out of the global warming balloon. Global temperatures stopped rising a few years ago, much to the dismay of the climate campaigners. The U.N.'s upcoming Copenhagen conference--which was supposed to yield a binding greenhouse gas emissions reduction treaty as a successor to the failed Kyoto Protocol--collapsed weeks in advance and remains on life support pending Obama's magical intervention. Cap and trade legislation is stalled on Capitol Hill. Recent opinion polls from Gallup, Pew, Rasmussen, ABC/Washington Post, and other pollsters all find a dramatic decline in public belief in human-caused global warming. The climate campaigners continue to insist this is because they have a "communications" problem, but after Al Gore's Nobel Prize/Academy Award double play, millions of dollars in paid advertising, and the relentless doom-mongering from the media echo chamber and the political class, this excuse is preposterous. And now the climate campaign is having its Emperor's New Clothes moment. Read more.

Physicists Ask American Physical Society to Rescind Its Statement on Global Warming Because It Was Based on “Cheat[ing]” and “Corrupted” Work
From "The Volokh Conspiracy"
While the wider world is just beginning to realize that the subfield of paleoclimatology is in shambles (and has been for the last decade), scientists in related disciplines are increasingly fighting back against the shoddy work and orthodoxy that was foisted on them.
A small group, including several prominent physicists, are asking the American Physical Society to rescind its political statement on climate change (tip to Bishop Hill):
Dear fellow member of the American Physical Society:
This is a matter of great importance to the integrity of the Society. It is being sent to a random fraction of the membership, so we hope you will pass it on.
By now everyone has heard of what has come to be known as ClimateGate, which was and is an international scientific fraud, the worst any of us have seen in our cumulative 223 years of APS membership. For those who have missed the news we recommend the excellent summary article by Richard Lindzen in the November 30 edition of the Wall Street journal, entitled “The Climate Science isn’t Settled,” for a balanced account of the situation. It was written by a scientist of unquestioned authority and integrity. A copy can be found among the items at http://tinyurl.com/lg266u, and a visit to http://www.ClimateDepot.com can fill in the details of the scandal, while adding spice.
What has this to do with APS? In 2007 the APS Council adopted a Statement on global warming (also reproduced at the tinyurl site mentioned above) that was based largely on the scientific work that is now revealed to have been corrupted. (The principals in this escapade have not denied what they did, but have sought to dismiss it by saying that it is normal practice among scientists. You know and we know that that is simply untrue. Physicists are not expected to cheat.)
We have asked the APS management to put the 2007 Statement on ice until the extent to which it is tainted can be determined, but that has not been done. We have also asked that the membership be consulted on this point, but that too has not been done.
None of us would use corrupted science in our own work, nor would we sign off on a thesis by a student who did so. This is not only a matter of science, it is a matter of integrity, and the integrity of the APS is now at stake. That is why we are taking the unusual step of communicating directly with at least a fraction of the membership.
If you believe that the APS should withdraw a Policy Statement that is based on admittedly corrupted science, and should then undertake to clarify the real state of the art in the best tradition of a learned society, please send a note to the incoming President of the APS ccallan@princeton.edu, with the single word YES in the subject line. That will make it easier for him to count.

China under pressure to play key role at Copenhagen climate summit
The Chinese want our money to pay for the commitments they are making in Copenhagen.
Beijing - As the world's worst greenhouse-gas emitter, China will be under especially intense pressure at next week's climate change summit in Copenhagen to play a key role in cutting the world's carbon emissions.
Beijing, though, is well prepared to defend its corner, Chinese and foreign experts say, in the expected battle between rich and poor nations over who should do what to avert potentially catastrophic global warming.
The steps it is already taking to reduce emissions, along with a new target-setting pledge to do more, put China in "a unique and convenient position in the slipstream behind the US," says Jørgen Delman, a professor of China studies at the University of Copenhagen. Read more.

Only one in two voters accepts man-made climate change, according to new poll
Nearly one in two voters believes there is no proof that mankind is causing global warming, according to a new opinion poll.
The ICM survey for The Sunday Telegraph will dismay proponents of "man-made" climate change – including leading scientists and the majority of world governments – as they gather in Copenhagen for the landmark climate summit.
Asked if they backed the main conclusion of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), that humans are largely responsible for modern day rises in temperatures, 52 per cent of voters agreed.

Is this our Great Green Hope?
Resource-industry officials, scientists and politicians from around the world have flocked to Weyburn because CCS — a process by which carbon dioxide, the byproduct of fossil-fuel development, is pumped underground and trapped in saline aquifers or rock formations once inhabited by oil and gas before industry pumped them clean — has been elevated to the top of the list when it comes to climate-change solutions.
Alberta, home to much of Canada’s oil-and-gas industry, has led the way, committing $1.956-billion of its $2-billion climate-change fund to four CCS projects since October. Ottawa has pitched in as well, but not to the same extent. Read more.

Prostitutes Offer Free Climate Summit Sex
Danish sex workers are offering free sex to COP15 in order to defend their industry.
Copenhagen Mayor Ritt Bjerregaard sent postcards to city hotels warning summit guests not to patronize Danish sex workers during the upcoming conference. Now, the prostitutes have struck back, offering free sex to anyone who produces one of the warnings.
Copenhagen's city council in conjunction with Lord Mayor Ritt Bjerregaard sent postcards out to 160 Copenhagen hotels urging COP15 guests and delegates to 'Be sustainable - don't buy sex'.
"Dear hotel owner, we would like to urge you not to arrange contacts between hotel guests and prostitutes," the approach to hotels says.
Now, Copenhagen prostitutes are up in arms, saying that the council has no business meddling in their affairs. They have now offered free sex to anyone who can produce one of the offending postcards and their COP15 identity card, according to the Web site avisen.dk.

One rollicking climate change debate: Corcoran v. Cary
Photo: The Post's Terence Corcoran, left, squares off against Anthony Cary, British High Commissioner to Canada. (Tyler Anderson/National Post; Jana Chytilova/National Post)
The following is an exchange between Financial Post columnist Terence Corcoran and Anthony Cary, British High Commissioner to Canada since 2007.
Anthony
...Given the scale of the risk and the relatively low cost of responding to it, the case for urgent and radical action as a simple matter of risk-management seems to me incontrovertible.
Terence
...Come to think of it, even if the world were melting I would not want a bunch of neo-totalitarians trying to stop it from happening — or trying to control everything in the name of saving a world that is melting.
This is a great debate between two very articulate proponents of the two sides. One side accepts that there is a good chance that global warming is caused by man and can be averted by man. The other side wants more proof that man is causing global warming and that we can have any impact on reduing it - without destroying ourselves.

Grim evidence that global warming eats at scientists’ brains
Permalink Andrew Bolt Blog
Once again, I have to ask: if the evidence of man-made warming is so clear, why all the lies and exaggerations? Take the latest example, from the ABC yesterday:
Grim evidence of the effects of climate change are emerging in Canada, with scientists reporting more cases of cannibalism among polar bears.
Tourists often take excursions to northern Manitoba for a first hand look at polar bears. But one group recently experienced a horrifying sight as a male bear separated a cub from its mother, then killed and ate it.
Scientists say there have been at least eight cases of polar bears eating cubs this year and that the cubs are being killed for food.
Wow. Eight cases of bears eating cubs? Must be global warming, since nothing like this has been seen before.
Oops.
From the Arctic Institute of North America, 1999:
Infanticide and cannibalism of juvenile polar bears (ursus maritimus) in Svalbard.
Arctic
September 01, 1999
Derocher, A.E.; Wiig, O…
(Received 29 January 1999; accepted in revised form 9 June 1999)
ABSTRACT. Two instances of infanticide and cannibalism in polar bears (Ursus maritimus) were observed in SE Svalbard, at Hopen Island. In the first, an adult male killed three young cubs at a den site and consumed one of them. In the second, an adult male actively pursued, killed, and consumed a dependent yearling. Infanticide of dependent polar bear offspring by adult males may be more common in Svalbard than in other populations because the population is close to carrying capacity or because geographic features reduce spatial segregation of age and sex ...
Intraspecific predation, infanticide, and cannibalism have been reported in polar bears (Belikov et al., 1977; Hansson and Thomassen, 1983; Larsen, 1985; Lunn and Stenhouse, 1985; Taylor et al., 1985). However, some of the instances have followed human activities such as harvest or immobilization (Taylor et al., 1985). Regardless, intraspecific predation has been suggested as a regulating feature of ursid populations (e.g., McCullough, 1981; Young and Ruff, 1982; Larsen and Kjos-Hanssen, 1983; Stringham, 1983; Taylor et al., 1985).
So cannibalism in polar bears has been observed and noted in studies going back more than 30 years.
And it’s not an isolated and extraodinary phenomenon, as researchers 24 years observed::
Observations of intraspecific aggression and cannibalism in polar bears (Ursus maritimus)
Taylor, M. Larsen, T. Schweinsburg, R.E.
Arctic, v. 38, no. 4, Dec. 1985, p. 303-309
ASTIS record 18266
Cannibalism in polar bears appears to occur as carrion feeding and as attacks by males on small cubs or incapacitated individuals. Direct observations indicate that intraspecific killing and cannibalism occur among polar bears throughout the Arctic. The high incidence of Trichinella infection and circumpolar observations of cannibalism suggest that polar bears will readily eat other polar bears when they can do so without excessive risk of injury. Speculations that intraspecific aggression and cannibalism may be an important social and ecological force are consistent with existing information on polar bear biology.
Why did these warmist scientists in the ABC’s report portray an old and relatively common phenomenon as a startling new one, and hail something perfectly natural as evidence instead of extraordinary man-made warming?
Ignorance? Deception?
And what’s the journalist’s excuse?

CEI Demands EPA Stop Plans to Regulate Greenhouse Gases in Wake of Climategate Fraud
Washington, DC, December 3, 2009 - In the wake of the burgeoning Climategate fraud scandal, the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) on December 2 filed an emergency petition demanding that the Environmental Protection Agency stop its plans to regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act, pending a complete investigation.
The purpose of the filing is to “put EPA on notice that new information has very recently been released, whose content is so grave that it may well destroy EPA’s scientific basis for an Endangerment Finding.” The petition urges EPA to reopen its proceeding and engage in a full examination of this information, accompanied by public comment. Clean energy conservatives can embrace - Market based Energy
Conservatives champion the essential characteristics of America: liberty, enterprise and ingenuity. As world leaders consider how to transform the way we make and use energy in the face of a changing climate, it's time for an energy policy true to that spirit -- and it shouldn't be anathema to the American right.
Conservatives have a robust tradition of principled concern for the environment. It was, after all, Teddy Roosevelt who created five national parks and signed the Antiquities Act. It was Richard Nixon who established the Environmental Protection Agency, and George H.W. Bush who ushered in one of the greatest environmental success stories, the 1990 cap-and-trade plan to take on acid rain. Read more.

Is James Hansen the ClimateGate Leaker?
Hmm, a very interesting theory. First, James Hansen is one of climate-scammer Al Gore's pals and has been exposed as a total fraud. Here he says the Copenhagen summit must fail, a curious statement considering he's been one of the primary hoaxers in the globwarm movement.
The scientist who convinced the world to take notice of the looming danger of global warming says it would be better for the planet and for future generations if next week's Copenhagen climate change summit ended in collapse.
In an interview with the Guardian, James Hansen, the world's pre-eminent climate scientist, said any agreement likely to emerge from the negotiations would be so deeply flawed that it would be better to start again from scratch.
"I would rather it not happen if people accept that as being the right track because it's a disaster track," said Hansen, who heads the Nasa Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York.
"The whole approach is so fundamentally wrong that it is better to reassess the situation. If it is going to be the Kyoto-type thing then [people] will spend years trying to determine exactly what that means." He was speaking as progress towards a deal in Copenhagen received a boost today, with India revealing a target to curb its carbon emissions. All four of the major emitters – the US, China, EU and India – have now tabled offers on emissions, although the equally vexed issue of funding for developing nations to deal with global warming remains deadlocked. Jon Stewart Talks Climategate
This is big news when even left-wing comics are talking about Climategate. Watch the video.
Rex Murphy on Climategate
The best part of this video is the look on Peter Mansbridge's face after Rex signs off.
Comment from the Rex Murphy piece.
"These emails were given to the BBC 3 weeks before. BBC did nothing and out of anger files were posted on the internet. BBC would have buried this story if not for the internet. 5 Full days after this story with web servers collapsing due to traffic the CBC had Gore and David Suzuki on their Q radio show for a FULL hour. How with phone in and email questions did not one mention of climate gate occur? The CBC has major guilt in this scandal. Fantastic thumbs up to Rex, you really nailed this issue"
"We all know that the media is all about show business. The 'climate change' topic gave them the show they needed in the last few years. Now that 'climategate' became viral, we see them (slowly) turning sides. Even though I, as a skeptic, would be happier to see the scientific facts as the wheel of such a U-turn, I must recognize that only through scandal we could ever make our point heard. I hope that after all this stuff settles the true science (that has being hurt for so long) rises again!"

Climategate: Phil Jones accused of making error of judgment by colleague
Phil Jones, the professor at the centre of a row over climate change data, has been accused of making an error of judgment by his US colleague.
Prof Jones, director of the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit (CRU) has been accused of manipulating climate change data following thousands of leaked documents that suggested academics delete sensitive emails to evade Freedom of Information requests from climate change sceptics.
Prof Jones, who has denied altering figures, has since said he would stand down from his post while an independent review is carried out
One of the scientists to whom the emails were addressed, Professor Michael Mann, the Director of the Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State University has moved to distance himself from some of the comments in the emails that suggest scientists did not want the IPCC, the UN body charged with monitoring climate change, to consider studies that challenged the view global warming was genuine and man-made. Dutch: Gore Wrong on Snows of Kilimanjaro
Newspapers and news sites in the Netherlands today extensively broke the news of the findings of a research team led by Professor Jaap Sinninghe Damste — a leading molecular paleontologist at Utrecht University and winner of the prestigious Spinoza Prize — about the melting icecap of the Kilimanjaro, the African mountain that became a symbol of anthropogenic global warming.
Professor Sinninghe Damste’s research, as discussed on the site of the Dutch Organization of Scientific Research (DOSR) — a governmental body — shows that the icecap of Kilimanjaro was not the result of cold air but of large amounts of precipitation which fell at the beginning of the Holocene period, about 11,000 years ago. Global Warming science must be re-evaluated in wake of Climategate
Initially pretending not to notice that a major scandal has broken, undermining the veracity of all who foretell climate induced doom for the planet, the warmists are gravitating to a uniform damage-control spin. The common response from most PR- hacks now is that yes the emails look bad, (after all they are only human), but the underlying science of global warming is still valid.
Scholars who do research in any discipline, such as history or even journalism, know that exploring primary sources to check a premise is the only way to validate an assumption. We value these key sources so much that we build large repositories to house them; i.e. libraries and museums. The thought behind this is that concepts and theories can be evaluated, validated or debunked by anyone willing to do the research. The destruction of primary data or sources is a crime against science and the pursuit of knowledge.
The Climategate emails have revealed that climate alarmist scientists at the CRU and elsewhere have systematically restricted access to their primary data, manipulated that data when it suited them and ultimately destroyed the crucial field data all assumptions follow from. By any measure this is unforgivable. The situation becomes much graver when the economic stability of the world could be impacted by assumptions that are based on the data of two climate research agencies that collaborate closely with each other.
In a tale that is reminiscent of the Nixon Watergate cover-up, Phil Jones has become the Rose Mary Woods of the CRU – endeavouring to protect his alarmist elite by erasing the evidence.
No, the underlying science of global warming is not “still” valid and with what we know now never was. There were too few sources of raw data. The primary data could not be checked and evaluated by any interested party. The vested interests aggressively denounced and libelled any decent. We cannot trust any conclusions that emanate from this type of resource.
Simply put – the science will have to be done over again – this time with open access to all data and models that will be used to impact public policy.
